Trichotillomania is a compulsive urge to pull one's hair resulting in noticeable hair loss. Individuals with this disorder characteristically experience a tension prior to pulling and relief or gratification after pulling.

Named by the French Dermatologist Hallepeau in 1889, Trichotillomania is currently classified as an impulse control disorder in psychiatric classification. A growing consensus exists among hair pullers, as well as Trichologists, that the name trichotillomania is misleading and incorrectly implies that hair pullers are manic or psychotic.
